Philip Cohen, “Why we need open science in sociology, and how we can make it happen”

January 10, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Friday, January 10th, 12:00-1:00 pm, Haines 279

Abstract: With a perceived imperative for “public engagement,” sociologists seek to make their work relevant in many arenas, but face the constraints of shrinking enrollments and budgets, and widespread skepticism of the scientific enterprise. I will discuss the public/intellectual intersection and how open research practices may contribute to our credibility and effectiveness. Topics include the economics of academic publishing, and the movement toward, transparency, reproducibility, and replicability in the research lifecycle. I conclude with a set of recommendations for best research practices.
